Guardiola: “The profound sorrow I have will accompany me for the rest of my life”

FC Barcelona's former manager and current coach of Bayern Munich expresses his deep sorrow for the loss of his friend, Tito Vilanova

After Bayern Munich’s victory over Weder Bremen (5-2), Pep Guardiola held a press conference in which he remembered his friend Tito Vilanova: “I want to express my condolences on behalf of my family to his father, Joaquín, his mother, María Rosa, to Montse, his wife, and to his children, Carlota and Adrià.”

Guardiola, who had Vilanova as his assistant for five years at FC Barcelona (one year with the reserve team and four with the first team), talked about his long relationship with the late manager that started when they were both children at La Masia: “We were very young, we wanted to conquer the world and that’s what we did. The profound sadness that I have will accompany for the rest of my life, forever.”

Bayern mourn the loss of Vilanova

Many clubs and personalities from the world of sport have expressed their sorrow for the death of the ex Barça manager. One of the clubs to offer up their condolences is Bayern Munich. The German club posted a message, in Catalan and German, on their website penned by director general, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: “Bayern Munich received the news of Tito Vilanova’s death with dismay and deep sorrow. We had the opportunity to know FC Barcelona’s ex manager during Barça’s visit to Munich last year, we knew him and we we appreciated him as a great manager and a marvelous human being. Tito Vilanova was especially close to Pep Guardiola and his coaching staff.” The players of the German team played their match this weekend with a black armband, and before kick off a minute of silence was observed.

Tito Vilanova, a life dedicated to FC Barcelona

He was the manager in the season of 100 points, the highest total ever for FC Barcelona

A product of La Masia, Vilanova was part of the greatest Barça team of all time

On April 25 2014, at the age of 45, Tito passed away after a long struggle against the illness which was first diagnosed two and a half years earlier.

This is one of the most tragic times in the entire history of FC Barcelona. The news that has shocked the football and sporting world is that Francesc ‘Tito’ Vilanova i Bayo (Bellcaire d’Empordà, 17/09/1968 – Barcelona 25/04/2014), a man admired and loved by everyone, has passed away at the age of 45 after failing to overcome the illness that forced him to resign from his duties as first team manager.
Tito Vilanova was the manager in FC Barcelona’s record-breaking season of 2012/13, when the team got 100 points in the league, and contributed to the greatest Barça team of all time as assistant coach to Pep Guardiola. He won everybody’s admiration for his achievements in the football world, and later for his immense courage in the final years of his life.
President Josep Maria Bartomeu spoke on behalf of the Board of Directors today when he said on social networks that “Tito Vilanova was a wonderful person, and will never be forgotten at FC Barcelona. Thank you for everything you taught us. May you rest in peace.”
FC Barcelona is offering its unconditional support to Tito Vilanova’s family, his wife Montse and his children Carlota and Adrià, the latter a player in the Barça academy.

Barça in his heart

Vilanova was brave, honest, hard-working, perfectionist, methodical, pragmatic and intuitive on both a personal and a professional level, and always remained loyal to the club and to himself, as defined by two of his companions from his youth right through to his managerial days, Jordi Roura and Aureli Altimira.
Tito Vilanova came to the club at the age of 15, when he came on trial from UE Figueres in the 1984/85 season.
He had just turned 16 when he stepped into La Masia for the first time, and remained there as a resident until June 30, 1989. It was there that he forged a close friendship with Guardiola, Jordi Roura and Aureli Altimira, with whom he would later share so much success on the Barça coaching staff.
‘The Marquis’, as he was known at the time, was a tall, lanky midfielder, with exceptional skill, especially renowned for his free kicks and how he read the game. As a Barça player, Tito featured in two friendlies for the first team in 1989 and later played for Figueres, Celta, Badajoz, Mallorca, Lleida, Elche and finally Gramenet, where he retired from active duty.
As a coach, Vilanova was analytical, cerebral and observant and was famed for the amount of gestures he used make as he directed his teams. Those that worked alongside him considered him a tactical genius in a job for which his nature could not have been better suited.
He first started coaching at FC Barcelona in charge of the U14 team that included future stars like Gerard Piqué, Cesc Fàbregas and Leo Messi. After that, he coached at Palafrugell, Figueres and Terrassa.
He returned to FCB in 2007/08, this time as assistant manager to Pep Guardiola with Barça B, who he helped guide to promotion up to Division 2B.
The year after, the Guardiola-Tito tandem took over the first team, and led it to fourteen major titles in four years. The team rewrote the record books in 2009 by winning all six trophies at stake: the Champions league, La Liga, the Spanish Cup, the Spanish Supercup, the European Supercup and the Clubs World Cup.

First team manager

On April 27, 2012 Tito Vilanova was the natural choice to take over from the departing Pep Guardiola as FC Barcelona first team manager. Director of Sport Andoni Zubizarreta considered it the natural progression and the best way to continue Pep’s legacy, and his choice was fully supported by then president Sandro Rosell and the rest of the Board.
The results showed that this had been a wise decision, for Barça won the league. They dominated the championship, leading the table from the very first day and getting 100 points out of a possible 114 to equal Real Madrid’s record from 2011/12. The team also set a new goalscoring record with its 115 goals in 38 games, an average of three goals a game.
The total of 32 wins, four draws and just two defeats, eventually beating Madrid by 15 clear points, are testimony of the outstanding job that Tito Vilanova did as manager of FC Barcelona that 2012/13 season. Barça’s 22th Liga, that of Tito and Abidal, will never be forgotten. What’s more, the team reached the semi-finals of the Champions League and the Spanish Cup, narrowly missing out on a place in both finals.
His achievement won him plenty of individual accolades. In 2013 the ‘Marca’ and ‘Mundo Deportivo’ newspapers both named him manager of the year. Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes was invited to present the Catalan paper’s award, which was collected on his behalf by Zubizarreta. In his speech, Heynckes spoke emotionally about Vilanova, saying that “under Tito the team has played fantastic football, like in other years. Tito is a great football strategist. He’s hard-working, reserved and valiant, and has a direct, fluid relation with his players. He has a positive sense of human values. He has not only set an example for the sporting world, but for the world in general with his outstanding elegance. I wish him all the luck he deserves. He’s a champion of sport and of life.”
Unfortunately, the illness announced on November 22, 2011 brought an early end to the dream of managing the team he held so close to his heart. He was unable to dedicate his full effort to the task in the 2012/13 season, and at the start of the following campaign, it was announced on July 19, 2013, that he was not well enough to continue in the position.
On April 25 2014, at the age of 45, Tito passed away after a long struggle against the illness which was first diagnosed two and a half years earlier.
Barça will cherish his memory forever. He will always form part of the club’s proud history. He shall be eternally remembered.
May he rest in peace.

Football - Former Barcelona coach Vilanova dies aged 45

Former Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has died following a long battle with cancer that forced him to stand down at the end of last season, the club announced on Friday.

He took over at the Nou Camp ahead of the 2012-13 season having been Pep Guardiola's assistant during the most successful period in Barca's history in which they won three out of four La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues in 2009 and 2011.
Barcelona went on to make the best-ever start to a La Liga season with 18 wins from 19 games but, in December 2012, Vilanova was diagnosed with cancer for the second time.
It meant his assistant Jordi Roura had to take charge of the team on those occasions when he was undergoing treatment.
At the end of the season Vilanova announced he was resigning to concentrate on his recovery from the illness.
"Tito Vilanova has passed away today at the age of 45. It happened this afternoon as our former coach was not able to overcome a disease he has fought since 2011," said Barcelona.
"The club wishes to express their deepest condolences to his family with whom it shares their pain in these moments as do fans, members of FC Barcelona and all the world of football and sport," added a club statement.
Jose Mourinho, a former Barcelona assistant coach, was quoted in a tweet from his current clubChelsea saying: "Tito Vilanova's passing is a sad day for football, for Barcelona and most importantly for his family and friends.
"On behalf of everybody at Chelsea Football Club I send my deepest condolences at this most difficult time."
Juventus coach Antonio Conte added: "I'm saddened by the death of Tito Vilanova, who was a great fighter in life and on the pitch. We will miss him."
Vilanova, a midfielder came through Barca's youth system but was let go in 1990, played for several lower league teams before finally getting his chance in the Spanish top flight with Celta Vigo where he played for three season in the mid-1990s.
It was as a coach though that he made his mark and he began working with the Barcelona youth teams, training future first team players like Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique and Cesc Fabregas.
After several seasons away from the Catalan club he returned in 2007 as assistant to Guardiola with the Barca B team. The following season the pair took charge of the first team and Vilanova went on to play a key role in the club's success.

PERSONAL BIOGRAPHY: Leo Messi

Leo Messi, with Four Ballon d'Orawards to his name (2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012) can be officially considered the best player in the world. But despite so many individual virtues, he is also a remarkable team player.

This Argentinian striker's footballing career started in 1995 at Newell's Old Boys, where he played until the year 2000. At the age of 13, Lionel Messi crossed the Atlantic to try his luck in Barcelona, and joined the Under 14s.
Messi made spectacular progress at each of the different age levels, climbing through the ranks to Barça C, followed by Barça B and the first team in record time.
In the 2003-2004 season, when he was still only 16, Messi made his first team debut in a friendly with Porto that marked the opening of the new Dragao stadium.
The following championship-winning season, Messi made his first appearance in an official match on October 16, 2004, in Barcelona's derby win against Espanyol at the Olympic Stadium (0-1). With several first team players seriously injured, the services of several reserve team players were called upon, and Messi became a regular feature of Barça squads.
On May 1, 2005, he became the youngest player ever to score a league goal for FC Barcelona - against Albacete when Messi was only 17 years, 10 months and 7 days old. That record would eventually be beaten by Bojan.
At the Under 20 World Cup in Holland, Messi not only won the title with Argentina, but was also the leading goalscorer and was voted best player in the tournament. Aged 18 years, he had become one of the hottest properties in the world game. Shortly after, he made his first full international appearance in a friendly against Hungary.
His breakthrough came in the 2005-06 season, starting with an amazing performance in the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Juventus. He was also outstanding at the Santiago Bernabéu, in Barcelona's unforgettable 3-0 win, and also at Stamford Bridge, in the Champions League match against Chelsea. Injury kept him sidelined for much of the latter stage of the season, but Messi still played a total of 17 league games, 6 in the Champions League and 2 in the Copa del Rey, and scored eight goals
The following season Messi moved up a gear and astounded the world with goals such as the one he scored against Getafe in the Copa del Rey. In the 2006/07 season, and even though the team didn't win any titles, the Argentine was second in the FIFA World Player awards and third in the Ballon d’Or. He continued to develop in the 2007/08 campaign, when he scored 16 goals and gave 10 assists in the 40 games he played in. In 2008, Leo Messi was runner up in the FIFA World Player awards for the second season in a row.
In the 2008/09 season, and now without Ronaldinho alongside him, Messi became the main star of the Barça show. He managed to stay injury free all season, and played 51 games, scoring 38 goals. The Argentinian was also fundamental in the Copa del Rey and Champions League finals, scoring Barça's second goals in both. In 2009, he finally won both the FIFA World Player and Ballon d’Or.
How far can Leo Messi go? He was the league's top scorer in the 2009-10 season and equalled Ronaldo's historic total of 34 goals (96-97). He scored the goal against Estudiantes that won Barça the Club's first World Club Cup.
But without settling for that, the Argentinian went even further in the 2010/11 season, scoring no fewer than 53 official goals, a Spanish record only matched by Cristiano Ronaldo (that very same season). Messi, like in Rome, played a vital role in the Champions League final at Wembley were scored a scorcher from outside the area to put his team ahead. In 2011, he also won the Ballon d’Or for the third time, a feat only previously achieved by Cruyff, Platini and Van Basten.
The season 2011/12 is when Messi moves past César Rodríguez's record of 232 goals to become the Club's all time top goalscorer. He achieves this on the 20th of March 2012 in a 5-3 victory over Granada in which he scores a brilliant hat-trick.
Two days earlier, on March 7, 2012, the football world watched in awe as he scored five goals in a single game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Premier League - Ramires banned for four games for violent conduct

Chelsea midfielder Ramires has been banned for four games by the FA after accepting a charge of violent conduct.

The Brazilian swung his arm at Sebastian Larssonduring the Blues’ 2-1 Premier League defeat at home to Sunderland.
It means Ramires will miss the matches against Liverpool, Norwich, Cardiff and the opening game of the 2014/15 season.
More to follow.

"El Madrid no dio tres pases seguidos en la primera parte"

"¿Si no somos verticales?

No recuerdo qué le he dicho a Robben".

Champions League - We're lucky they only scored one, says Bayern chief

Pep Guardiola is more confident than ever of Bayern Munich reaching the Champions League final - but Franz Beckenbauer does not share his view.

Bayern enjoyed 80 percent possession in the first half but it was the nine-times European champions who scored when Karim Benzema completed a quick break in the 14th minute for the winner.
The Bavarians, hoping to become the first team to successfully defend the Champions League title, struggled to break down the solid Real defence.
When they did find a way through they were let down by sloppy finishing.
"What we were missing was the finish," said Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, who is looking for a treble of titles in his first season in charge.
"The result is certainly not ideal, but we can still improve in the second leg. We will analyse the game and then decide what our best options are for the return leg in order to successfully overcome this task.
"I am very optimistic. Even more than before this game."
However, former Bayern player and coach and honorary president Franz Beckenbauer was less impressed.
He told Sky television: "Possession doesn't mean anything when your opponents create the better chances. We are lucky they only scored one."
Guardiola did not see it that way, and insisted that keeping the ball was more important.
"I could not be prouder of my team, because we dominated the ball," the Spaniard added.
"I told my players that I wanted them to play with courage and bravery and with respect to the people who were watching us, and that's what we did.
"I know how difficult it is to play against Real Madrid, as a player and as a coach, and many players are scared when they come here, but we showed character."
The coach also defended his team's tactics, when asked if they should have played in a more direct manner.
"The faster the ball goes forward, the faster Madrid bring it back to us," he said.
"Madrid's virtue is that they are so quick on the counter-attack, they are unstoppable in that sense. Their players are footballers but they are like athletes, so playing back and forth is a risk."
Bayern winger Arjen Robben also insisted that the Bavarians had produced a strong performance.
He told German television station ZDF: "We head into the second leg with a lot of confidence. I think we played well, we were up against Real Madrid, a super team, and we dominated them.
"We created a couple of chances, Gotze's was excellent. Now we have to improve for the return match."
The sensational season Bayern have enjoyed so far suggests they are capable of turning the tie around at the Allianz Arena, where they will be backed by a vocal 60,000 crowd.
Their recent slump in form, however, has worried club officials and fans. After clinching the Bundesliga title in record time with seven games to spare they lost two of their next three league games, drawing the other.
"I don't think there ever was another Bayern team that dominated at the Bernabeu the way we did it," said Bayern sports director Matthias Sammer. "But the fact is we controlled possession, not the result.
"Now we have to make it happen in the second leg. We have to be ruthless in our finish."
Bayern wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben struggled to make any inroads into the Real defence and despite enjoying 64 percent of overall possession the Germans had to wait until late in the game for their best chance with Mario Goetze's close-range shot blocked by Real's Iker Casillas.
"We were missing that little bit of luck and that decisive attacking action," said captain Philipp Lahm.
"We would have liked a different result but we have every chance to score two or three goals at home. I am positive about the return leg. We have often shown we can turn ties around."

Real Madrid bust the myth: It’s not how much, but what you do with it

Real Madrid did not so much 'park the bus' against Bayern Munich, but strategically place a Ferrari in the driveway.
The difference between Chelsea’s so-called anti-football display against Atletico Madrid, and Real’s slick counter-attacking 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich was… well, the difference was in the detail.
Diego Simeone complained that only one team was trying to score at the Vicente Calderon, but to the north east of the city at the Bernabeu a similar underlying strategy yielded different results.
Pep Guardiola’s Bayern boasted a whopping 72% possession on Wednesday night, no mean feat at Real Madrid, yet the hosts fashioned more chances and carved out a 1-0 win.

It could have been more for Carlo Ancelotti, had Cristiano Ronaldo not missed a sitter and Manuel Neuer not made some inspired saves.
Apart from a late spell that saw the hosts get all hands on deck, and Xabi Alonso deny Thomas Mueller with a fantastic challenge, Bayern did not exactly set the world alight in front of goal.
Chelsea, of course, were limited by personnel. A fine team they are, but their main outlets of counter-attacking speed are Eden Hazard (injured), Samuel Eto’o (injured) and Mohamed Salah (cup-tied). Hazard aside, they are not in the same stratosphere as Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale or Angel Di Maria – Chelsea’s real quality lies in defence and central midfield – but a deep-lying breaking tactic requires speed and width.
And Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid side, accustomed to dominating teams in their domestic competition, had exactly that as they repeatedly carved Bayern apart on the counter.

.
In his SkySports punditry Jamie Carragher rather quaintly reiterated that setting up to face Bayern “was not rocket science” (which, incidentally, hasn’t been at the forefront of technology since the 1970s, but we get his point).
It may not be intellectually challenging, but it does require organisation, planning, strict adherence to a gameplan and – in order to yield victory and not a simple shut-out – must be complemented with the pace and quality Real have at their disposal.
The job is only half done, of course; Bayern could easily beat Real in Munich, although the lack of an away goal means Pep’s team will need to attack, leaving them as prone at the back as they were on Wednesday.
His insistence on playing Philipp Lahm in central midfield will surely be cast aside, as it was late during this encounter – when you have the best right-back in the world, it would be foolish not to pit him against the best winger-forward in the world.
But it may not be enough. Neither Bale nor Ronaldo were fully fit on Wednesday, and both should be next week. It could well be even worse for Bayern.

Premier League - Moyes admits results were poor as LMA blast 'unprofessional United'

David Moyes has spoken of his gratitude to Sir Alex Ferguson for giving him the chance to manage Manchester United.

Moyes, who was sacked by United on Tuesday, said he felt proud to have taken the team to the Champions League quarter-finals, and that his time at Old Trafford will only help his future career.
He also said that he understood fans' unhappiness with the job he had done: "I both understand and share their frustration," he said in his statement.
"I have always believed that a manager never stops learning during his career, and I know I will take invaluable experience from my time as United's manager.!
He spoke warmly of the United staff but, perhaps pointedly, not the players.
"I remain proud to have led the team to the quarter-finals of this year's Champions League and I remain grateful to Sir Alex Ferguson for believing in my ability and giving me the chance to manageManchester United," he added.
The League Managers' Association has blasted the "unprofessional manner" in which Moyes was sacked.
LMA chief executive Richard Bevan said: "The LMA is very disappointed with the nature of David's departure from Manchester United and to read extensive reports in the press, confirming David's sacking, before David himself had been spoken to officially by the club.
"Throughout his time at United, David, as he always does, has conducted himself with integrity and professionalism, values that he believes in and that have been strongly associated with the club and its rich tradition.
"It is therefore sad to see the end of David's tenure at United being handled in an unprofessional manner."
David Moyes statement in full:
"To have been appointed as manager of Manchester United, one of the biggest football clubs in the world, was and remains something of which I will always be incredibly proud," Moyes said.
"Taking charge after such a long period of continuous stability and success at the club was inevitably going to be a significant challenge, but it was one which I relished and never had a second thought about taking on.
"The scale of the manager's job at United is immense, but I have never stepped away from hard work and the same applies to my coaching staff. I thank them for their dedication and loyalty throughout the last season.
"We were fully focused and committed to the process of the fundamental rebuilding that is required for the senior squad. This had to be achieved whilst delivering positive results in the Barclays Premier League and the Champions League. However, during this period of transition, performances and results have not been what Manchester United and its fans are used to or expect, and I both understand and share their frustration.
"In my short time at the club I have learnt what special places Old Trafford and Carrington are. I would like to thank the United staff for making me feel so welcome and part of the United family from my first day. And of course thank you to those fans who have supported me throughout the season. I wish you and the club all the best for the future.
"I have always believed that a manager never stops learning during his career and I know I will take invaluable experience from my time as United's manager. I remain proud to have led the team to the quarter finals of this year's Champions League and I remain grateful to Sir Alex Ferguson for believing in my ability and giving me the chance to manage Manchester United."

FC Barcelona's appraisal of the suspensory effect granted by the FIFA Appeal Committee

The ban on the Club making transfers during the next two transfer windows has been lifted

FC Barcelona has responded positively to the decision announced today by FIFA’s Appeal Committee to provisionally grant suspensive effect to the appeal made by the Club against the sanction imposed by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee.
The sanction was announced by the FIFA Disciplinary Commission last April 2 and prevented the Club from signing players during the next two transfer windows. FC Barcelona presented an appeal against the measure within the required period.
FC Barcelona declares its utmost respect for the resolutions pronounced by the bodies responsible for sporting justice.

Barcelona transfer ban suspended

The Catalans' punishment has been suspended until a final decision on their appeal against the ban has been taken

Fifa has announced they have suspended Barcelona's transfer ban following their appeal against the punishment.

The Catalans were banned from signing players for the next two transfer windows for breaching regulations relating to the international transfer of players under 18 years of age, but the suspension has been put on hold until a final decision on their appeal is taken.

"The club Barcelona have lodged an appeal before the Fifa Appeal Committee against the decision of the Fifa Disciplinary Committee that sanctioned the club for breaches relating to the international transfer and registration of players under the age of 18. Together with the appeal, the club requested that its appeal be granted suspensive effect," an official statement reads.

"In this respect, the chairman of the Fifa Appeal Committee, Larry Mussenden, took into consideration the sanctions imposed against the club, the complexity of the matter, the start date of the next registration period – 1 July 2014 – and the fact that the Fifa Appeal Committee does not seem in a position to take a decision on the main issue early enough so that an eventual appeal of the club against its decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport would still be decided before the beginning of the next registration period.

"Consequently, the chairman of the Fifa Appeal Committee considered that the appeal lodged by the club is to be granted suspensive effect.

"In view of the foregoing, the chairman of the Fifa Appeal Committee assures that proper and adequate appeal proceedings will take place and, at the same time, that all rights of the club will be respected."
World football's governing body's decision to suspend Barcelona's transfer ban means the already confirmed transfer of Alen Halilovic from Dinamo Zagreb is back on, while it now also seems to be a matter of time before they complete the signing of Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
A Barca statement read: "FC Barcelona has responded positively to the decision announced today by Fifa’s Appeal Committee to provisionally grant suspensive effect to the appeal made by the Club against the sanction imposed by Fifa’s Disciplinary Committee.
"The sanction was announced by the Fifa Disciplinary Commission last April 2 and prevented the Club from signing players during the next two transfer windows. FC Barcelona presented an appeal against the measure within the required period.
FC Barcelona declares its utmost respect for the resolutions pronounced by the bodies responsible for sporting justice."

Football - Guardiola dismisses United link, reaffirms his loyalty to Bayern

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola has denied he is interested in becoming the next Manchester United manager.

The Spanish coach, who is in his first season at the Bundesliga champions, has already won the domestic title in record time and is chasing the treble.
Ahead of the Champions League semi-final first leg with Real Madrid, the former Barcelona boss was asked if he was set to take the United job following the sacking of David Moyes.
Guardiola denied this was the case.
"I signed for three years. I am here, I am Bayern's and I want to stay here for two more years to do my job," Guardiola said. "We won the Bundesliga but I feel that we can still improve. I still have a job to do.
"I knew the style of Spanish football perfectly but it was not easy for me to go to Germany and change culture and the style. I feel like I need more time to feel that this is really my team.
"I absolutely do feel that Bayern is my team now but we can play better and in that sense I still have work to do.
"I want to stay here because I am comfortable here, the people are such gentlemen in my work and I want to stay a little bit longer."
